This red, rectangular electric actuator for rotaryvalves delivers highly reliable service at a reduced price. The R5meets the needs of 21st Century industrial applica-tions at a pricethat is unmatched.
mOTOR & CApACITOR (A) The R5 has a 120 or 220 VAC single phasepermanent split-capacitor reversible induction motor. 12 or 24 VDCmotors are available upon request. The UL listed motor features abuilt-in thermal over-load protector of a bi-metallic strip in thewindings set at 230°F (110°C) with automatic reset.
mOTOR bRAkE (b) All AC motors feature an internal break. When powerto the actuator is cut off the brake stops the motor and holds thevalve in position until power is restored.
CAmS / CAm ADJUSTmEnT (C)
Cams are infinitely adjustable by a Hex key with no special toolsneeded. Stan-dard factory setting allows 90° reversible rotationbetween open and closed posi-tions. Extended rotation such as 180°,270° or beyond can be achieved simply by adjusting the cams.
TRAVEL LImIT SWITChES (D) Bray has provided two SPDT switches asstandard. The 10A, 220 VAC switches are used for AC motor control.Two optional auxiliary switches are available to signal a lowwat-tage AC lamp or a DC controller input. Switches are easilyaccessible without interference from other components.
SpUR GEAR SYSTEm (E) The heavy-duty spur gear train is composed ofprecision cut, multi-staged gears and shafts. The gears and shaftsare heat treated high alloy steel and will withstand locked rotorconditions. The spur gear system is permanently lubricated at thefactory.

ACTUATOR mOUnTInG (F)
R5 actuators comply with ISO 5211 standards for mounting ofactuators to valves. A double D bore is standard. A double square(star) bore is available.
InDICATOR ShAFT (G) The shaft is Stainless Steel.
hEATER (h) A heater can be added to the R5 to prevent possibledamage to electrical components due to condensa-tion build-upinside the actuator.
TERmInAL bLOCk (I) The actuator switches are connected to aterminal block. The block has been designed for ease of customerwiring without interference from other components and featuresclearly marked terminal numbers. The screw clamp terminal block israted at 10A, 250VAC. The block has been placed near the twoconduit entries with ample room for running wire leads. A wiringdiagram is included inside the enclosure cover for easy reference.

hOUSInG SEAL (J) The large O-ring seal between the cover and baseprovides a waterproof enclosure and prevents ingress of moisture.This seal is far superior to commonly used gaskets.
EnCLOSURE (k) Die-cast aluminum cover and base are waterproof anddesigned to meet NEMA 4, 4X and IP 65 specifications. The enclosurefeatures a high-quality polyester powder coating offeringexceptional corrosion, wear, impact and ultraviolet resistance.
VALVE pOSITIOn InDICATIOn
The R5 features a highly visible valve posi-tion indication system.Made of ABS, a Pointer (L) on top of the unit indicates valveposition through the full range of travel. Open and Close letteringand a direction of travel arrow are molded into the housing foreasy reference and permanent position indication.
Two LEDs, one for open and one for closed, are located on the unitside. The LEDs light up either red or green when the valve reachesthe open and closed positions. Beside each LED, graphic iconsindicating open and closed have been molded into the housing.
mAnUAL OVERRIDE Bray’s manual override with double D flats iseasily accessible by removing the position in-dicator. By pushingthe indicator shaft down, the spring loaded output shaft disengagesfrom the output gear. The Manual Override allows manual rotation ofvalve position when electrical power is off. To reengage, applypower and the motor will reengage the gearing.
COnDUIT EnTRIES (m) The R5 features two conduit connections withinherent stops. Entries are available in either 1/2" NPT or metricthreads. One entry is for power, one for control wiring.
ELECTRICAL CAbLE COnnECTIOnS (Optional) A multi-pin, watertightcable receptacle offers full compatibility with today’s industrialwiring systems. Factory pre-wiring prevents errors and providesquick–connect field installation. Cordsets with flying leads orextension cords with connections on both ends can be pluggeddirectly into the receptacle.
COmpACT, LOW pROFILE ECOnOmICAL DESIGn
The R5 delivers high torque in a com-pact, low profile design at areduced cost. This design offers the advantages of smaller spacerequirements, lighter weight and ease of installation/mainte-nancewhen compared to other electric actuators.
DIRECT mOUnTInG OF ThE R5 SE-RIES 73 On bRAY VALVES
Bray actuators mount directly to Bray valves without using externallinkage. Field installation is simple and mis-alignment isminimized. For sanitary processing and outdoor applications, theBray direct mounting system reduces the possibility ofcontamination buildup or corrosion between the valve and actuator.
The mounting pattern complies with ISO 5211 and NAMURrecommendations (VDI/VDE 3845). The R5 can be mounted and operatedin any position. Bray can provide linkages for mounting the R5 toother devices requiring 90° rotation. Please consult the Brayfactory for further information.
